Atman is a concept from the Hindu religion. It refers to the eternal soul, considered the higher part of a person's identity and separate from the ego. It is the essence of Brahman in material form participating in the illusions of earthly reality. In the Hindu belief, Atman is experienced through intense religious practice and introspection. This higher self evades full explanation as words are not considered adequate to transfer the true meaning of our spiritual nature.
The concept of Atman defines the true self as spirit-based rather than matter-based. It posits that all humans are part of a larger consciousness, and that they can become conscious of their divine nature while still existing in the material plane. Many new age belief systems have incorporated this aspect of Hinduism into their practices.
