or track and field also track-and-field games

Variety of sport competitions held on a running track and on the adjacent field. It is the oldest form of organized sports, having been a part of the ancient Olympic Games from circa 776 BC to AD 393. Modern events include various sprint and middle- and long-distance races, relay races, hurdling, steeplechase, high jump, pole vault, long jump, triple jump, shot put, discus throw, hammer throw, javelin throw, decathlon, pentathlon, and heptathlon. Cross-country running, marathons, and speed walking, which are rarely held on a track, are usually considered adjuncts of athletics. Events are held indoors and outdoors, and records are kept separately; some events are modified or eliminated for indoor competition.

Charles Allen (born March 3, 1977 in Georgetown, Guyana) is a Canadian-Guyanese athlete specializing in hurdling, but also a sprinter.

Born in Georgetown, Guyana Allen emigrated to Canada, first to Brampton where he attended Turner Fenton Secondary School, and then to Malton where he went to Ascension of Our Lord Secondary School. He competed for Guyana in the 2000 Summer Olympics, and still holds the Guyanese record in the 110 meter hurdles. Switching to the Canadian team for the 2004 Summer Olympics he made the finals in the 110 meter hurdles after setting a new personal best time in each of the qualifying rounds. Finishing a respectable sixth, but in a slower time than he had hoped. He was also captain of Canada's 4x100 relay team, but the team failed to pass the qualifying stages. At the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, however Allen, won a bronze medal with the Canadian relay team.

Allen currently attends Clemson University in South Carolina where he is working on a masters in education.

As a hurdler he is known for knocking down the majority of the hurdles during his sprint.
