Municipal Commissioner of Mumbai

The Municipal Commissioner of Mumbai is the chief of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. Though the Mayor is the head of the house, his role is largely ceremonial and almost all powers are vested in the Commissioner. He is responsible for the infrastructure of the city and its maintenance. Sewage, lighting, roads, schools, water, and waste all come under his responsibilities. The BEST and the city Fire Brigade are autonomous bodies under the organisation. The commissioner is an Indian Administrative Service officer appointed by the Maharashtra state government. Mr. Jairaj Phatak, is the current MC of Mumbai.
