–noun, plural -ros, -ro.
(sometimes initial capital letter) the official common currency of 12 European Union nations (Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain). In 1999 the euro was adopted by 11 of these nations as an alternative currency in noncash transactions. In 2002 it was adopted by Greece, and in that year it replaced the 12 national currencies.
