The International Academy of Suriname (IAS) is located in a quiet residential neighborhood of Paramaribo, the capital city of Suriname. A school was founded in the mid 60’s by Suralco, a subsidiary of the Aluminum Company of America, to accommodate their expatriate employees. In 1966, the West Indies Mission opened a school for their children and the children of other mission agencies. The two schools merged in 1984 and the missionary community operated the new entity. The new school was known as the American Cooperative School. People from Paramaribo know us as the American school. The IAS Board bought the school from Suralco a couple of years after the merger.

Wycliffe Bible Translators(SIL) provided the majority of the staff over the years. Their plan to withdraw from Suriname in 2001 meant that IAS might have to close. In 1998, the school board contacted the Network of International Christian Schools(NICS), who agreed to accept IAS as an affiliate school. This change allowed the school to continue its education ministry in partnership with NICS. The new arrangement has allowed the school to expand its vision and ministry.

The school has one class of each grade from prekindergarten (4 year olds) through 12th grade. The curriculum guide is based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). IAS is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The student body comes from 16 countries. The largest numbers of students are from the U.S., the Netherlands and Suriname.

The International Academy of Suriname serves the country of Suriname by offering an accredited American education to both expatriate and local families. The school is staffed by a caring, Christian community of professional educators. Reflecting the diversity of Suriname, the school is open to students of every race, nationality and religion.
