yellow sea

The Yellow Sea is a body of water lying between eastern China and the Korean Peninsula. The Yellow Sea is a part of the Pacific Ocean and it gets its name from a yellow sheen on the water caused by sand storms blowing off the Gobi Desert. The waters of the Yellow Sea are rich in important commercial fish species such as horse mackerel, Pacific herring, eel, squid and sea bream.

Coastlines bordering the Yellow Sea primarily engage in fishing pursuits and are densely populated on both sides. Oil exploration in the northern part of the Yellow Sea has been relatively successful in recent years. Estimates for the oil reserves in this area have been calculated at between 9 and 20 billion tons.
