Opened in July 1849 by the by the Sheffield and Lincolnshire Junction Railway, part of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway, it is today the northern terminus of East Midlands Trains' Robin Hood Line from Nottingham and Mansfield (the section from the latter town was re-opened to passengers on 25 May 1998) and an intermediate stop on the regional service from Lincoln Central to Sheffield operated by Northern Rail.
