Widescreen wallpapers

The term wallpaper or desktop background refers to a photo or graphic image used as a background on your desktop screen for your PC. Microsoft calls it a wallpaper and the Mac operating system refers to it as a desktop pattern. The difference between wallpapers and widescreen wallpapers is that they are just wider images to fit your screen without any stretching.

Formats

The typical resolution sizes used for widescreen monitors are 2560x1600, 1920x1200, 1680x1050, 1440x900, and 1280x800 but there are some exceptions to these. The requirement of Widescreen Wallpapers arised due to advent of Widescreen monitors, which were more comfortable to work with, provided with better utilisation of screen space.

Dimensions

Many screen resolutions are in a 4:3 ratio, but widescreen (16:9 or 16:10) monitors have different aspect ratio requirements for wallpaper. This is what mainly differs widescreen monitors from regular monitors. If you try to apply a normal wallpaper to a widescreen monitor, stretching will occur.
