West Hempstead

West Hempstead, uninc. city (1990 pop. 17,689, including Lakeview), Nassau co., SE N.Y., on Long Island. It is chiefly residential.
West Hempstead is a suburban community (and census-designated place) in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 18,713 at the 2000 census.

West Hempstead is in the Town of Hempstead.

Geography

West Hempstead is located at (40.696409, -73.652522).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.8 square miles (7.1 km²), of which, 2.7 square miles (6.9 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km²) of it (3.64%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 18,713 people, 6,024 households, and 4,867 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 7,039.1 per square mile (2,716.2/km²). There were 6,110 housing units at an average density of 2,298.3/sq mi (886.9/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 82.69% White, 5.94% African American, 0.17% Native American, 5.08% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 3.21% from other races, and 2.89% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 9.94% of the population.

There were 6,024 households out of which 38.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.3% were married couples living together, 11.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 19.2% were non-families. 15.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.09 and the average family size was 3.47.

West Hempstead is home to over to 1,000 Orthodox Jewish families.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 26.2% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 29.1% from 25 to 44, 23.0% from 45 to 64, and 14.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 95.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.7 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $71,260, and the median income for a family was $78,481. Males had a median income of $51,391 versus $35,871 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $26,732. About 3.4% of families and 4.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.4% of those under age 18 and 3.4% of those age 65 or over.

Jewish Community

West Hempstead hosts a vibrant Jewish community. It includes several synagogues: the Young Israel of West Hempstead, Anshei Shalom, Eitz Chaim, and the Jewish Community Center. There are also numerous Kosher eating establishments, and a Mikvah. The Hebrew Academy of Nassau County has two campuses in West Hempstead, serving students from Pre-K through 6th grade.
