The station signed on November 2, 1983. Until then, WTTW was piped in from Chicago by most cable systems in the area. A few cable systems on the Illinois side of the market also carried Peoria's WTVP. Of course, PBS reserved the right, during the 1970's, to offer its programs to any of the three commercial stations, mostly for the benefit of non-cable viewers, but no evidence has yet surfaced regarding this.
From 1992 to 2003, WQPT operated a satellite station, KQCT in Davenport. After WQPT boosted its signal to better cover the Iowa side of the market, it sold KQCT to IPTV, who renamed it KQIN.
