Vengeance (2006) was the sixth annual Vengeance professional wrestling pay-per-view event produced by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). It took place on June 25, 2006 at the Charlotte Bobcats Arena in Charlotte, North Carolina and was a Raw brand-exclusive event.
The main event was a 5-on-2 Handicap tag team match between D-Generation X (Triple H and Shawn Michaels) and the Spirit Squad (Kenny, Johnny, Mitch, Nicky, and Mikey). Triple H and Michaels won the match after pinning Kenny and Mikey, respectively. One of the predominant matches on the card was John Cena versus Sabu in an Extreme Lumberjack match, which featured superstars from the Raw and ECW brands at ringside. Cena won the match after forcing Sabu to submit to the STFU. Another primary match on the undercard was Rob Van Dam versus Edge for the WWE Championship, which Van Dam won by pinfall after performing a Five-Star Frog Splash.
Many of the existing feuds carried on after the event. Ric Flair continued to face Mick Foley, defeating him in an "I Quit" match at SummerSlam two months later. On the July 3 edition of Raw, Edge defeated Van Dam and Cena in a Triple Threat match to win the WWE Championship. Following his win, Edge began an angle with Cena over the WWE Championship and defeated him to retain the title at SummerSlam. After defeating The Spirit Squad, D-Generation X began feuding with The McMahons (Vince and Shane), which led to a match between the two teams at SummerSlam.
The main feud heading into Vengeance was between D-Generation X (DX) and the Spirit Squad. The feud all started with Shawn Michaels crossing paths with Mr. McMahon, who tried to screw Michaels. Mr. McMahon set Michaels in matches with his hand-picked team, the Spirit Squad. At Backlash, Michaels suffered a loss, when the Spirit Squad interfered on behalf of The McMahons (Vince and Shane). The following weeks on Raw, Michaels got revenge on both Vince McMahon and the Spirit Squad, until the May 22, 2006 edition of Raw, where the Spirit Squad finally got their revenge on Michaels, when they faced him in a 5-on-1 handicap match. The Spirit Squad kayfabe injured Michaels' left knee, after Spirit Squad member, Kenny, performed his finisher, the diving leg drop. Then on orders of Vince McMahon, Triple H was to "break Shawn Michaels' skull", with his signature sledgehammer. Triple H failed to do what Mr. McMahon ordered and instead attacked the Spirit Squad, thus turning face. On the June 5, 2006 edition of Raw, Triple H was supposed to become a member of Mr. McMahon's "Kiss My Ass Club", but Triple H backfired it when he executed a Pedigree to Vince McMahon, laying McMahon in the ring. The following week on Raw, Vince McMahon announced that Triple H would face the Spirit Squad in a Gauntlet match, where he proclaimed that the Spirit Squad would re-enact their doings to Triple H similar to Shawn Michaels, in the month before. In the match, the Spirit Squad took the advantage over Triple H. Kenny grabbed a steel chair and inserted the chair on Triple H's left knee, similar to when Kenny assaulted Michaels. Vince, however, informed the Spirit Squad not to attack his knee, but to insert the chair around Triple H's neck. Forgetting one member of the Squad, Mitch, Vince called him out, who throughout the match he called all four members one-by-one. Mitch, however, was thrown out from the curtain by Shawn Michaels. Marking the return of D-Generation X, the duo humiliated the Spirit Squad on the June 19, 2006 edition of Raw, when DX dumped green slime onto the group and embarrassing the team afterwards, by beating them.
The other main match on the card was between John Cena and Sabu. This feud cultivated at ECW's One Night Stand, where Cena was booked to defend the WWE Championship against Rob Van Dam, after Van Dam cashed in his Money in the Bank contract, thus setting the match at One Night Stand. During the match, an individual dressed as a motorcyclist speared Cena through a table that was set up by the corner of the ring. This individual turned out to be Edge. Van Dam performed the Five-Star Frog Splash on Cena. Van Dam went for the pin, however the referee was previously knocked unconscious by Edge. ECW Representative Paul Heyman ran towards the ring and counted the pinfall victory, thus giving the win to Van Dam. On the television debut of ECW, a brawl broke out between Van Dam and Edge. Edge, who left through the ECW crowd, was attacked by Cena. Following the attack, Cena went at ringside and knocked Paul Heyman unconscious and left before being chased out by ECW Originals. Following the attack by Cena, Heyman announced that all the ECW superstarts would be at Raw next week looking for revenge. The following week on Raw, Heyman showed up with ECW Original, Balls Mahoney, who was scheduled to face Cena in a match. The match was won by Cena, who applied the STFU, forcing Mahoney to submit. As the match ended, Cena was attacked by ECW Original Sabu, who in the premiere of ECW won a ten man Extreme Battle Royal (legalized weapons), where the winner would face Cena at Vengeance. Sabu performed a triple jump leg drop on him, diving onto him and putting Cena through the announcers' table. The following night on ECW, Cena showed up at the ECW Locker room, where he challenged Sabu to an Extreme Lumberjack match, in which Sabu accepted.
The third main feud into the event was between Rob Van Dam and Edge for the WWE Championship. On the television premiere of ECW, Rob Van Dam was awarded the ECW World Heavyweight Championship by Paul Heyman, thus making Van Dam a double champion, by holding both the ECW and WWE Championship. Van Dam's celebration was interrupted by Edge. Edge, who was number one contender for the WWE Championship, told Van Dam that they both had a lot in common, referring to them being both Money in the Bank winners and successfully becoming WWE Champions.
