Vibo Valentia, town (1991 pop. 34,836), Calabria, S Italy, near the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is an agricultural and commercial center. A flourishing Roman town, Vibo was destroyed by the Arabs in the 9th cent. and was rebuilt by Emperor Frederick II in the 13th cent. The town has suffered from numerous earthquakes (especially in 1783 and 1905), but Frederick II's castle still stands. There are also Greek ruins. Vibo was known until 1928 as Monteleone di Calabria.

Valentia or Valencia, island (1991 pop. 680), c.7 mi (11.3 km) long and 2 mi (3.2 km) wide, off the coast of Co. Kerry, SW Republic of Ireland. Its slate, once famous, is no longer quarried, and the island is now best known as the eastern terminus of the first permanent transatlantic cable, laid (1866) by the Great Eastern and connecting Valentia with Trinity Bay, Newfoundland. The cable station is at Knightstown. Glanleam, the old estate of the knight of Kerry, has subtropical gardens.
