Urtijëi
Urtijëi (Ortisei) (Ortisei; Ladin: Urtijëi; German: St. Ulrich in Gröden; Latin: Urticetum) is a small town of 4,500 inhabitants in the province of Bolzano-Bozen, located in the Italian region of Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol. It occupies the Gherdëina Valley (it: Gardena; de: Gröden) within the Dolomites, a mountain chain that is part of the Alps. The name derives from the Latin urticetum ("place of nettles").
Urtijëi (Ortisei) borders the following municipalities: Kastelruth (Castelrotto), Villnöß (Funes), Lajen (Laion), and Santa Crestina (Santa Cristina).
The town's economy is mostly based on Winter skiing tourism and Summer hiking tourism and woodcarving. In the 2001 census, more than 80% of the inhabitants classified themselves as native speakers of Ladin. However, both Italian and German are commonly spoken as additional first languages; English is also widely spoken and understood.
