Tubberclair is a large sprawling parish with a population of approx 1000 people. It borders Lough Ree for 10 miles on the Westmeath side and is reputed to be the centre of Ireland with a monument supposedly depicting this in the heart of the parish. it is also home to Tubberclair GAA football club which boasts a rich history in county Westmeath and has provided many county players over the years. It is also home to the Glasson Golf Hotel and Country Club. The name Tubberclair comes from the Irish Tobar an Chláir (meaning the well of St Clair) showing its history with many ancient churches and monasteries dotted throughout the parish. And who told you this? might it not be Tobar Chláir? the well of St. Clare, as opposed to Tobar an Chláir which means the well of the plain.
