Seaport (pop., 2001: 744,983), capital of Kerala state, southwestern India. The community became prominent when it was made capital of the kingdom of Travancore in 1745. A large fort contains several palaces and a Vaishnava temple, which is a noted pilgrimage centre. Its cultural amenities include the University of Kerala (1937).

Kallar is a quiet little town on way to Ponmudi. Kallar is 45 km from Trivandrum. Ponmudi is a further 15km from here. The majestic Vamanapuram River flows thru this place. The river is crystal clear compared to its brownish state in other parts where it flows. Caution is advised while trying to bathe in the river Many have lost their lives because of their own fault and nature's fury. Torrential rain can raise the level of the river and sweep the things which comes in its way. A few dental college students of Trivandrum lost their lives a few years ago because of flash floods. But if one is careful and wacthful, a refreshing bath in the river is well advised. Many varieties of birds and trees can be seen in and around Kallar. Kallar is a photographers' paradise. Now Kallar is well protected by the tourism department and a family outing is quite safe. The only drawback is the fact that no good restaurants are nearby.
