Tisdale, Saskatchewan

Tisdale is a business centre for the rich agricultural area of northeastern Saskatchewan in Canada. The post office of Tisdale, provisional district of Saskatchewan, North West Territories was created 1904-02-01. However, Tisdale is now a town in the rural municipality of Tisdale No. 427, in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan.

Located at the junction of Highway 35 and Highway 3, and serviced by both the Canadian National Railway and the Canadian Pacific Railway, Tisdale is the grain handling centre of the region with five inland grain terminals, and is the centre of local industry. The intersection of Highways #3 and #35 has traffic volumes of 11,200 vehicles per day and is the location of the largest 7-Eleven in Canada (by floor space). Also found at this corner is the roadside attraction of "The World's Largest Honey Bee".

Tisdale's Recreational Centre the Tisdale RecPlex, hold Cumberland Regional College, Tisdale Middle and Secondary School, a 6 lane curling rink, state of the art artificial ice arena, as well as the John Baron Auditorium and Maurice Taylor Performing Arts Theatre.

The Tisdale Skating Club(TSC)is very successful and has turned out many national and provincial skaters over the past years. They also hosted the 2006 Starskate Provincial Championships.

The Community was originally known as "Doghide" after the Doghide River that flows through the town, but with the arrival of the railway the community was renamed "Tisdale" in honour of F.W. Tisdale, an employee of the CN Railway. Western Canada’s biggest gun shoot out took place just east of Tisdale. The historic gunfight involved a posse of Provincial Police and four outlaws and original artifacts are on display at the Tisdale Museum.

Tisdale is known as the "Land of Rape and Honey" due to its significance in producing both rapeseed (canola) and honey. Tisdale is also known as the Honey Capital of Saskatchewan. One third of farmland in the Northeast is cropped into canola and 10% of the honey produced in Canada comes from this area. Traditionally the area produces about 9 million pounds ($7.2 million) in honey. Due to its possible multiple meanings, industrial metal band Ministry named their 1988 album The Land of Rape and Honey after seeing the motto on a Tisdale souvenir mug.

Tisdale boasts a 24-Bed Hospital with four doctors, an ambulance service, and long term care facilities. There are 12 churches, two schools, and the Cumberland Regional College. Tisdale Airport has a paved runway 13/31 with ARCAL (Aircraft Radio Control of Aerodrome Lighting), a terminal building, and several hangars.

In 2005, Tisdale celebrated its 100th birthday with a homecoming celebration in conjunction with Saskatchewan's centennial. The town also underwent beautification projects, including the construction of a new town square. Tisdale is also home to Rylan Oleksyn who was voted Canada's best looking guy under 18 in December 2007.
