A threesome is a form of group sex involving three people of any gender combination.

Types

The level of sexual activity among the three members may vary greatly. Some threesomes may involve one who has a voyeur role, sometimes the invited member is there for enhancing the experience which does not involve having intercourse with the couple role (this is sometimes referred to as soft-swinging), other threesomes may involve some same sex contact, and other threesomes actively involve all three members.

Group sex

One activity in this form of group sex is when sexual intercourse and anal sex are performed on the woman by two men in a double penetration. Another form of threesome is when a woman is given either intercourse or anal sex by one man (doggie style), while she gives the second man a blow job. This is sometimes called a spit roast

Ménage à trois

Sometimes the term threesome is confused with the term ménage à trois, because both activities involve sex among three people. A threesome generally involves a couple that seeks out a third person for sex without the emotional entanglements that are normally seen in an open relationship. On the other hand, the term ménage à trois implies a special form of a threesome which involves an emotional bond among all three people and in many ways resembles more of an open relationship than a threesome.

Triad

A triad is a three way romantic relationship. It is most commonly used to describe a love relationship between three people where it can either take the form of a triangle (in which all three people have a love relationship with the other two) or a "V" (in which two people independently have a love relationship with a third). This is found mostly in Polyamory.
