Beta Ethniki is the second highest professional football league in Greece.

History

In first years, the system of conduct was very intriguing. It began in 1954 as regional championship, separated in two groups, North and South. Then, the participated teams was the champions of each Greek football clubs association. Every year the participated teams was different. In 1960, the Division took its name and some teams was permanent. From 1960 to 1984, there was existed a lot of groups, with peak in 1962 when the groups was totally ten. In 1962, was decided for the Division to be permanent, something that had as essential condition the disengagement of the teams from their local championships. This detail has led many statisticians to begin statistics from this period (1962-63). For 21 periods, from 1962-63 to 1982-83, championship was carried out in groups. The subordinate system was introduced for first time in 1983-84 season.

Structure

Eighteen clubs compete in the league, playing each other twice, once at their home stadium and once at that of their opponents for a total of 34 games for each club. At the end of the season, the three top clubs are promoted to Super League Greece, the first-level league, and the three bottom clubs are relegated to the third level, Gamma Ethniki.
