Tana, river, c.500 mi (800 km) long, rising near Mt. Kenya, central Kenya, E Africa, and flowing E then S across Kenya to the Indian Ocean. There are hydroelectric plants and irrigation projects in the Tana basin.
Tana or Tsana, largest lake of Ethiopia, c.1,400 sq mi (3,630 sq km), S of Gondar. It is fed by more than 60 streams, one of which is regarded as the source of the Blue Nile. The islands in the lake are home to a number of Ethiopian Orthodox monasteries.
