He worked closely with Olof Palme, and became known internationally for his support of Palestinian independence from Israel. In a TV interview on February 22, 2004 the Israeli ambassador to Sweden, Zvi Mazel, called Andersson and Sweden's UN ambassador Pierre Schori "professional anti-Israelis".

Andersson died suddenly from a heart attack on the afternoon of 2006-09-16.
