Adler, Stella, 1901-92, American actress, director, and acting teacher, b. New York City. The daughter of Jacob and Sarah Adler, stars in New York's Yiddish theater, she made her acting debut in 1906 in one of her father's productions. A member of the American Laboratory Theater in the 1920s, Adler co-founded (1931) The Group Theatre and was influenced by the ideas of Constantin Stanislavsky, with whom she briefly studied (1934) in the Soviet Union. Returning to The Group Theatre, she performed with the company and taught her modified version of the Stanislavsky method, which emphasized the use of imagination as the basis of acting technique. After a stint (1937-42) in Hollywood, where she acted in films and was a producer at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), she came back to New York, resumed theatrical acting and directing, taught at the New School, and later founded (1949) her own acting school. Adler, whose students included Marlon Brando, Robert De Niro, Warren Beatty, and many other performers, exerted a profound influence on American acting.

Stella, Frank, 1936-, American artist, b. Malden, Mass. In his early "black paintings" Stella exhibits the precision and rationality that characterized minimalism, employing parallel angular stripes to emphasize the rectangular shape of his large canvases. His innovative and influential use of irregularly shaped canvases first appeared in his metallic series in 1960. Later examples of his work stress color in decorative curved motifs. In the 1970s and 80s, Stella abandoned the studied, minimalist aesthetic in favor of a more improvised, dynamic, and dramatic idiom in mixed-media. During that time he abandoned flat paintings and instead created large, jutting, multipart, three-dimensional painting-constructions that often incorporate bright colors, enlarged versions of French curves, and lively brushstroke patterns.

Stella's work became fully three-dimensional in the early 1990s in a series of dense abstract sculptures composed of found and cast elements in stainless steel and bronze. These unpainted and often large-scale metal wall constructions, with their tangled, layered, and looping shapes, project an air of vibrant spontaneity. One of his most important and monumental sculptures is Prince of Homburg (1995-2001), installed outside the National Gallery of Art's East Building, Washington, D.C. Throughout his career, Stella also has been a prolific printmaker. The Whitney Museum, New York City, has several of his paintings, and his works are included in numerous museum and corporate collections worldwide.

Stella, Joseph, 1877-1946, American painter, b. Italy, emigrated to the United States in 1896. He studied at the Art Students League of New York City with William Chase and later in Italy and Paris. He is best known for his cubist- and futurist-inspired paintings executed in the years around 1920. These works strikingly expressed the vibrancy and dynamism of life in New York City. The best known of this group is "The Bridge," from the series New York Interpreted (Newark Mus., N.J.). He later turned to more mystical subjects, in paintings notable for their strong color and incisive realism.

Stella is a village in Newton County, Missouri, United States. The population was 178 at the 2000 census, at which time it was a town.

Geography

Stella is located at (36.762824, -94.189814).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.2 square miles (0.4 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 178 people, 74 households, and 46 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,152.7 people per square mile (458.2/km²). There were 87 housing units at an average density of 563.4/sq mi (223.9/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.31% White, 0.56% Native American, and 1.12% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.12% of the population.

There were 74 households out of which 29.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.6% were married couples living together, 9.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.5% were non-families. 31.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.98.

In the town the population was spread out with 29.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 29.8% from 25 to 44, 16.3% from 45 to 64, and 18.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 97.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 100.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $25,781, and the median income for a family was $25,417. Males had a median income of $27,813 versus $16,458 for females. The per capita income for the town was $11,799. About 14.6% of families and 12.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.8% of those under the age of eighteen and 3.7% of those sixty five or over.
