Specific modulus is a
materials property consisting of the
elastic modulus per mass
density of a material. The specific modulus is often important in
aerospace applications in which maximum strength for minimum
weight is required.The
dimensional analysis yields units of distance squared per time squared. A related property is the
specific strength, a more general term that compares any unit of strength (not just elastic modulus) to its density.
The structural members of the Crew Exploration Vehicle have been specified to be an aluminum-lithium alloy for this property, among others.
