The 1998 African Cup of Nations was the 21st edition of the African Cup of Nations, the soccer championship of Africa (CAF). It was hosted by Burkina Faso. Just like in 1996, the field of sixteen teams was split into four groups of four. Egypt won its fourth championship, beating South Africa in the final 2-0.

Non-Competing Nations

A number of nations did not compete at all during the 1998 Cup of Nations, for a variety of reasons. Some did not enter the initial qualification stages of the tournament, while others were banned from competition for withdrawing during the qualification for the 1996 African Cup of Nations.

Banned From Entering

Nigeria was banned from entering because of their withdrawal from the 1996 Cup after having already qualified for the final stage. The other nations withdrew during qualification for the 1996 tournament, preventing them from entering the 1998 Cup.
