The tribe of Škrijelj has its origin in North Albania in a small village "Shkreli" near Shkodra. Before converting to Islam in the 18th Century, they were Catholic, and many remained Catholic until today, especially in Kosovo. However, descendants of this tribe in Kosovo are mostly Albanian speaking and bear similar variaties to the surname: Shkrel/Shkreli (predominantly Muslim) and Shkryel (predominantly Catholic).
The tribe Shkrel was probably endangered bz other tribes in Albania, thus has emigrated from Albania to three locations: the Montenegro seaside, to Sanjak and to Rugova gill (in north western Kosovo near Peć).
Some numbers of Rugova Shkrels immigrated to the Pešter (Sandžak).
Škrijels originate from the tribe Klimenta (Kelmendi) as many other tribes.
Škrijels in the Sandžak region declare themselves as Bosniaks.
