"The Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss)" is a song written by Rudy Clark. The best known recordings of the song include a 1963 version by Betty Everett and a 1991 version by Cher, both of which made it into the Billboard Hot 100.

Song Info

The original recording of this song was by Merry Clayton, recorded in 1963 while she was one of The Raelettes.. Many other versions of this song have been recorded by such artists as Linda Ronstadt, Aretha Franklin, Cher, The Supremes and Lulu. Versions which alter the gender of the song (i.e., "It's in Her Kiss") have been recorded by such artists as The Newbeats, The Hollies, The Searchers and Simon 'Manfred' Howard. Linda Lewis had a hit in the United Kingdom with her version in 1975. Kate Taylor's version became a Hot 100 hit when released in 1977.

Though they never recorded a studio version of their duet, Linda Ronstadt and Phoebe Snow performed "The Shoop Shoop Song" during several joint concert appearances throughout the mid 1970s. The most notable of these was a 1976 appearance on Saturday Night Live.

Betty Everett version

The version by Betty Everett was the first to make it to the charts: it was released in 1963, the same year as Clayton's original recording. It appeared on Everett's album "It's In His Kiss" and then as a single in 1964.

This version became a big hit in many markets, peaking in the United States at #6, and also becoming a big success internationally. This version of the song was notably featured as a music video on Tiny Toon Adventures, in which Babs sings it regarding Buster.

Cher version

Song information

Cher's remake was the first North American single from the Mermaids OST, while in Europe "The Shoop Shoop Song" was the second single from the Mermaids OST and the first single release from her twenty-ninth album Love Hurts. The song was very successful in Europe and in the rest of the world. It reached the top spot in the United Kingdom and the Top 10 in many countries, while in North America the song received modest attention peaking #21 in Canada and #33 in United States.

Music video

The video for The Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss) was made to go along with the movie, Mermaids. The video features Cher along with Winona Ryder and Christina Ricci (then age 10). In the video, Cher and the 2 girls are in a music studio dressed in 1960's clothings and they are also wearing wigs that symbolize the way Betty Everett wore her hair during the 1960s. Clips of the film are shown during the course of the video. Finally near the end Cher and the girls are shown in an alley spray painting a wall.

A second video was released, but it's very hard to find. The video is very similar to the original except it does not show any clips of the film Mermaids in it.
