Shirur is a city and a
municipal council in
Pune district in the
Indian state of
Maharashtra.
Shirur is located on the boundaries of Pune and Ahmednagar districts on the banks of river
Ghod The town is also known as
Ghodnadi to distinguish the place among simillar places with the name
Shirur.
Ghodnadi means river
Ghod in native
Marathi language.
Demographics
As of 2001 India
census, Shirur had a population of 27,000. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Shirur has an average literacy rate of 72%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 77%, and female literacy is 66%. In Shirur, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Communities
Population consists mix of Hidu including castes like
maratha,and other sub casts based on their profession like
goldsmith,
Weaver,etc.These communities have formed diffrent colonies with their names in
Shirur.Other population include
Muslims,
Jain's(Mostly Marvadis) of
Shwetambar sub community and few
Christians.Marvadis migrated here during the 19th century.The
British had their Horse Stables here.The place is now been taken by
Maharashtra Government and its the colony for irrigation employees.Lot of
Muslim were taking care of these Stables with British army.
Education
There are schools giving education in native marathi language.Nagar palika
municipal council has few schools in diffrent parts of town.They offer education from Nursery to class 7 in marathi.There is one school giving education in Urdu language since Shirur holds quite a large number of Muslim population.Schools like

Industry around Shirur bloomed around year 1994 when state of Maharashtra announced the industrial zone around Shirur including towns Karegaon,Dhok Sangvi and Ranjangaon.The industrial zone is know as MIDC Ranjangaon-Karegaon.Diffrent manufactures have set up their facilities here.Apolo tyres,Whirlpool of India(Refrigerator),LG Electronics(Television,Mobile handsets),Daewoo Electronics(Refrigerator),National Panasonic(Now acquired by Videocon group),Wheels India,Bajaj Electricals,Fritolay(Pepsico Holdings)manufacturing Lays potato chips,Fiat automobiles,Kirloskar,Swarovski,Ohsung,a Korian company manufacturing electronics parts are among few others who have set up their units here.
