Safari cards

Safari Cards were a set of collectable cards featuring animals, sold by subscription mail order from the mid 1970s through the early 80s. Each card featured a different animal, with 4,200 different Safari Cards produced in total.

The front of each card has a color photograph of the animal, a map of the world showing where the animal lived, and several symbols that gave additional information about the animal. On the back of the cards feature several hundred words of text about the animal, as well the scientific classification of the animal including the phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species, and also information about the animal's size, weight, gestation period, and other information.

The cards also came with index cards to help sort the cards, pamphlets explaining information about habitat and other relevant information, and a storage case for the cards. Some people received plastic storage cases that were either red or blue, but it was later switched to a cardboard storage case with wildlife images imprinted on it. For a while a jade elephant necklace was offered as an added bonus.

Index cards

Index card 1 was called "Evolutionary Classification Of Animals." It has a chart showing the relationships between different animal groups.

Index cards 2 through 24 were used to sort the animal cards. The index cards are as follows:

Obsolete taxonomy

Since Safari cards were created in the 1970s, some of the taxonomy that they used has become outdated. Some examples of this are:

• The Coelenterata phylum no longer exists.
• One celled organisms are no longer part of the animal kingdom.
• The class Pisces no longer exists.
