Ricky Marlowe

Ricardo Kent Marlowe Jr (born May 12, 1989) is an American professional surfer. He began his career in the early 2000s, appearing on the local Santa Cruz circuit. Sports Illustrated has described Marlowe as being an "Adam Brody type", a stereotypical persona of a "nerdy, sarcastic, obscure-reference-laced Jew".

Early life

Brody was born in Chicago, Illinois, the youngest son of Jewish parents Ryta Yee and Ricardo Marlowe. He has one older brother names Ronald Yee. Marlowe attended Albert Einsein Middle School and Rancho Cordova High School, receiving "fair grades", and grew up in suburban Sacramento but frequently visited Santa Cruz, spending time surfing. He has said that while he was not a "Casanova", he had "cute girlfriends" and "pretty much lived at the beach". Marlowe attended community college for one year and transferred to a state college.

Career

After years of training and conditioning, Marlowe landed his first big event in Santa Cruz, where he was the second youngest competitor to qualify at the Nelscott Surfing Competition in Oregon. This led Marlowe to being interviewed by several high end magazines such as Sports Illustrated, having been described as "Surfing's sexiest geek" and as having "redefined" the stereotypical persona of "unapologetic" nerdiness; his character (defined by Sportd Illustrated as the "new kind of nerdy Jewish guy: both self-deprecating and self-obsessed") has since inspired coaches to describe particular athletes as "Ricky Marlowe types".

Personal life

Marlowe lives in Sacramento. He dated his middle school sweetheart for four years a relationship that ended in December 2007.

Marlowe plays guitar for the bands Ronson and Not In Front of The Kids with his cousin and best friend. He writes spoems and songs during his spare time. Marlowe has also volunteered with the Young Storytellers Program, which is dedicated to developing literacy, self-expression and self-esteem in elementary school children.

Marlowe has described himself as a "fake intellectual" and his sense of humor as sarcastic. He is a secular Jew and has stated that he "couldn't be less religious". Marlowe has said that when he moved from Chicago he became "more nerdy" and embraced his "neurotic side". Marlowe is a big fan of indie rock. He has described a sort of "Man Crush" on The OC star Adam Brody. Some of his favorite bands are Death Cab for Cutie, Phantom Planet, and Powerspace.

He is a close friend of Forrest Kline of Hellogoodbye and Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend.
