Riga Central Market

Riga Central Market

Riga Central Market (Rīgas Centrāltirgus) is a market in Riga, Latvia.

History

There had been plans to build a new central market in Riga since 1909, however the project was first disrupted by World War I, then in 1924 by disputes over financing the project. As a result the building of the market started only in 1928 and the market was opened in 1930.

Architecture

The market is best known for its reuse of old Zeppelin hangars for some of the market's food halls. The influences of Art Deco, Art Nouveau and Neoclassicism can be seen in the architectural style of the market complex.
