Azziz received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez and an M.D. from the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, Hershey, Pennsylvania. He completed a Residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at The Georgetown University Hospital, Washington, DC; and a Fellowship in Reproductive Endocrine/Infertility at The Johns Hopkins University, School of Medicine, Baltimore, Maryland. Azziz has also completed a Masters in Public Health (MPH) in 1995 and a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) in 2000 at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he served as faculty through 2002.
He is Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Reproductive Endocrinology/Infertility; and is a Fellow of both The American College of Surgeons (F.A.C.S.) and The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (F.A.C.O.G.). He is former Chair of the Advisory Committee on Reproductive Health Drugs of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration; and former member of the Reproductive Endocrinology Study Section of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He currently serves as a member of the Data Safety & Monitoring Board of the Reproductive Medicine Network, National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD); member and Programming Committee Chair, Network of Minority Investigators, National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK); and was appointed by Governor Schwarzenegger to serve as member of the Independent Citizens Oversight Committee (ICOC) of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CRIM), the state agency created to disburse 3 billion dollars in funding for stem cell research.
He has published over 300 original articles, book chapters, and reviews. He is Co-Editor of the text Essential Reproductive Endocrinology (with Drs. Bruce R Carr and Richard E Blackwell), published in 2004; Editor-in-Chief of Androgen Excess Disorders in Women (with Drs. John E. Nestler and Didier Dewailly), and now in its second edition (2007); Editor of the text Obstetrics & Gynecology: Cases, Questions, and Answers for Board Review, published by McGraw-Hill (2007); Editor of The Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: Currents Concepts On Pathogenesis And Clinical Practice, published by Springer (2007); and Co-Editor of Practical Manual of Operative Laparoscopy and Hysteroscopy (along with Dr. Ana Murphy), now in its second edition and translated into Chinese (1992 and 1997). He is a reviewer for numerous journals, and is a member of the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism and of Fertility and Sterility.
Azziz's research interests include the study of androgen excess disorders, including the epidemiology, genetics, and pathophysiology of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), the non-classic adrenal hyperplasias (NCAH), the role of the adrenal in hyperandrogenic disorders, the genetics of hyperandrogenic disorders, the physiology treatment of hirsutism; the regulation and physiology of adrenal androgens; and credentialing and cost-effectiveness of operative endoscopy for pelvic reconstruction. He is currently funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health for some of these studies.
He is Past-President and member of the Board of Directors of the Society of Reproductive Surgeons, and a past member of the Board of Directors of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine and The Society of Reproductive Endocrinologists. He is also a member of the Endocrine Society and The Society for Gynecologic Investigation, among others. He serves as Executive Director of the Androgen Excess Society, of which he is also a founding member.
Azziz received the President's Achievement Award of the Society for Gynecologic Investigation in 2000. He is also the recipient of the 1992 Cheston M. Berlin Award of the Pennsylvania State College of Medicine Alumni Society, Hershey, Pennsylvania, in recognition for outstanding service to the Society and its membership; and is a past-president of the Alumni Society at the College. Azziz is listed among "The Best Doctors in America" (published by Woodward/White) in 1995 & 2001; and in "America's Top Doctors" (published by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd), 2001 through the present. In addition, he was named to the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society of AACSB Accredited Business Programs in 2000. Azziz was recipient of the “Helping Hand of Los Angeles Endowed Chair in Obstetrics and Gynecology” in 2003.
