Rex

Warner, Rex, 1905-86, English author, b. Birmingham, grad. Oxford, 1928. A classical scholar noted for his translations from Greek and Latin, Warner taught in England, Egypt, and the United States. He was profoundly influenced by Kafka, and his early novels are expressionist allegories concerning problems of power; they include The Wild Goose Chase (1937) and The Aerodrome (1941), his masterpiece. Warner also wrote several historical novels, including The Young Caesar (1958) and Pericles the Athenian (1963); his essays, such as The Cult of Power (1946) and Men of Athens (1973), were also influential.

Harrison, Rex, 1908-90, English actor. Born Reginald Carey, he entered repertory theater at 16 as an apprentice. Harrison, noted for his suave, insouciant style, has appeared in many plays, including Anne of the Thousand Days (1949), Bell, Book, and Candle (1950), and In Praise of Love (1974). His performance in both the stage (1956) and film (1964) versions of My Fair Lady won enormous popular and critical acclaim. Harrison's other films include The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947), The Fourposter (1952), and Cleopatra (1962).

Stout, Rex, 1886-1975, American writer, b. Noblesville, Ind. He served in the navy and worked in New York City as founder and director of the Vanguard Press. His best-known works are nearly 70 mystery stories featuring Nero Wolfe, a large gourmet detective who solves crimes from the comfort of his study. Stout's Nero Wolfe Cookbook appeared in 1973. After Stout's death, Robert Goldsborough wrote a successful series of new Nero Wolfe stories.

Stout endowed his detective with his own passions for haute cuisine and the growing of orchids.

Rex is a census-designated place (CDP) in Robeson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 55 at the 2000 census.and ranked 4th on the list of the highest-income places in the United States.

Geography

Rex is located at (34.848018, -79.042034).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.9 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 55 people, 17 households, and 13 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 74.7 people per square mile (28.7/km²). There were 17 housing units at an average density of 23.1/sq mi (8.9/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 47.27% White, 40.00% African American, 9.09% Native American, and 3.64% from two or more races.

There were 17 households out of which 52.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.9% were married couples living together, 17.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.5% were non-families. 5.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.24 and the average family size was 3.69.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 30.9% under the age of 18, 14.5% from 18 to 24, 29.1% from 25 to 44, 12.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 89.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.0 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was in excess of $200,000, as is the median income for a family. Males and females had a median income of over $100,000. The per capita income for the CDP was $148,073. None of the population is below the poverty line.

Commerce

There are currently no mercantile operations in Rex. The primary industry is farming and farming related industries. Rex has two CSX railroad crossings as well as its own U.S. Post Office Branch. Some of the longtime commercial businesses in Rex were: H.P. Johnson - General Merchandise, R.N. Johnson Grocery, and I.J. Williams Grocery.

Religion

There are three churches in the immediate Rex, NC vicinity: Rex Presbyterian Church, Mount Olive Presbyterian Church, and New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church.
