The
Public Protector is an office ("State Institutions Supporting Constitutional Democracy" or "constitutional institution") of the Republic of South Africa, set up by Articles 181 and 182 of the Constitution of the Republic of
South Africa. It is similar to the office of
ombudsman in other countries.
The incumbent is
Mabedle Lawrence Mushwana, succeeding S A M Baqwa who was the first person to hold that office, from
1995 to
2002.
