Phil Godman, nicknamed ' "Mad Phil" was born
May 20,
1982 in
Edinburgh,
Scotland. Educated at
Merchiston Castle School where he captained the
rugby union side to victory in the
Scottish Schools Cup. He signed a professional contract with
Newcastle Falcons after leaving Merchiston. However, as the constant understudy to
Jonny Wilkinson at
Newcastle Falcons he moved to the
Edinburgh Gunners in the summer of 2004. He represented
Scotland at under 21, under 19 and under 18 levels before winning his first
cap for the
Scottish rugby union side as a replacement against
Romania. He has gone on to win 2 more, including one against the
All Blacks, where he came on as a replacement in the 70th minute and orchestrated Scotland's only try of the match with a deft kick behind the New Zealand defence for speedster
Simon Webster to dive on.
He also led Scotland A to the final of the Churchill Cup in Canada, and has become a central figure at Edinburgh Gunners. He was tipped to succeed Dan Parks as Scotland's number 10 in the 2006-07 season, but due to a dip in form he didn't stake his claim.
