Pend Oreille County

. It is named after the Pend d'Oreilles tribe
, whose name is French
" (literally "hangs in the ear"). As of 2000, the population is 11,732. The county seat is at Newport
, which is also the county's largest city.
Pend Oreille County was created out of Stevens County on March 1, 1911.

It also shares its northern border with British Columbia, Canada.

The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the county, the population was spread out with 26.30% under the age of 18, 5.50% from 18 to 24, 23.80% from 25 to 44, 29.50% from 45 to 64, and 14.90% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 100.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.60 males.
