Paracolic gutters

Peritoneal (paracolic) gutters are spaces, or recesses, between the colon and the abdominal wall.

There are four peritoneal (paracolic) gutters:

• right lateral gutter
• left lateral gutter
• gutter to the right of the mesentery
• gutter to the left of the mesentery

These gutters are clinically important because they allow a passage for infectious fluids from different compartments of the abdomen.
