Panopea smithae is a species of large marine bivalve mollusc in the family Hiatellidae.
Distribution
This species is
endemic to
New Zealand including the
Chatham Islands.
Habitat
Panopea smithae is found on coarse shelly bottoms, at depths of between 105 and 130
m.
Shell description
The shell is large and solid, of similar size to
Panopea zelandica but of
rhombus outline, being cut away ventrally at the anterior end, and obliquely truncated at the posterior end.
Height is up to 76 mm, width up to 130 mm, and thickness 60 mm.
