Pacification of Wujek

Pacification of Wujek

The Pacification of Wujek (Polish: Pacyfikacja kopalni Wujek) was a strike-breaking action by the communist forces in Katowice, Poland, culminating in the massacre of civilians on December 16, 1981.

On that day, pro-Solidarity miners striking against the declaration of martial law in Poland by Wojciech Jaruzelski were dispersed by the Ludowe Wojsko Polskie (communist army), the Milicja Obywatelska (communist police) and ZOMO (communist riot police). Special platoon of ZOMO opened fire on the miners, killing 9 and wounding 21 others.

On June 1, 2007, 15 former members of the communist police were sentenced to prison terms for their parts in the massacre.
