Olitski, Jules, 1922-2006, American painter, b. Russia as Jevel Demikovsky. While considered a color-field painter (see
color-field painting), Olitski produced works that are freer and less severe than many of those associated with the movement. At first he stained his canvases and later used a spray gun to cover large canvases with several layers of varied pastel colors, creating a soft, atmospheric effect. Olitski also made painted metal sculptures. His last works were mainly monotype prints and landscape paintings.
