Oli Sykes

Oliver "Oli" Sykes (born Oliver Scott Sykes on November 20, 1986) is the current lead vocalist for the deathcore band Bring Me the Horizon, originating from Sheffield, England.

Personal life

Sykes moved to live in Australia until he was the age of five with his parents. He then moved to Stocksbridge just out of Sheffield in the United Kingdom. As a teenager, he attended Stocksbridge High School and was a year below Alex Turner and Matt Helders of the Arctic Monkeys. While at school he began making compilation CDs and short tracks under the name of Quakebeat.

Other Projects

  • Quakebeat are compilation albums which Sykes made whilst at school. These also come under the name as "Quakesound".
  • Olisarus was an ambient electronic project which Sykes started when he was 16. James Spence of Rolo Tomassi accompanied the electronic beats on guitar.
  • Purple Curto was a two man Deathrash band featuring Sykes on drums and vocals and Neil Whitely on guitar. Neil Whitley, the brother of SJ Whitley, Sykes' ex girlfriend. Purple Curto recorded a number of songs and played only once, at Sykes' 18th birthday.
  • Sykes has recently revealed on his personal MySpace profile that he will be doing a future project that "couldn't be further away from Bring Me The Horizon's music. And if you don't like to dance, you may not like it." It is expected that this may be another electronic project which will be continued once Bring Me The Horizon have toured for their forthcoming album Suicide Season.
  • Death by ABBA is Sykes' ABBA tribute band which he and a few other members from the metal scene formed.

Incident in Nottingham

While on tour with Bring Me The Horizon in the United Kingdom allegations were made against Oliver that he urinated upon and then assaulted a female fan after a concert at Nottingham Rock City when she allegedly refused his sexual advances. Oliver was subsequently charged with urinating on the accuser, but not with physical assault. Online Music Zine Drowned In Sound claimed that Bring Me The Horizon were banned from Nottingham Rock City. However the band's label Visible Noise denied these rumors and the band subsequently played Nottingham Rock City on December 1 2007.

On April 13 2007, Sykes appeared in Nottingham Magistrates Court on a charge of common assault relating to the alleged urination incident, to which he pleaded not guilty. The case was adjourned until early May. On 3 May 2007 Sykes attended Nottingham Magistrates court for the second time and confirmed his not guilty plea. The case was adjourned again until 17 September 2007. However, due to lack of evidence, all charges against Sykes were dropped.
