Oakley, Annie, 1860-1926, American theatrical performer, b. Darke co., Ohio. Her original name was Phoebe Anne Oakley Mozee. From childhood on she was a "dead shot" with a rifle. She defeated in contest the noted marksman and vaudeville star Frank E. Butler, who subsequently married her and became her manager and assistant. As a major attraction (1885-1902) of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show she performed remarkable feats of marksmanship. In 1901 she was partially paralyzed in a railroad accident but continued to delight audiences with her brilliant shooting for 20 years. Her life was the basis for Irving Berlin's popular musical Annie Get Your Gun (1946).

Oakley is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 33,250 at the 2006 Demographics Report as produced by the City. However, there have been population increases since the report was compiled. Oakley is part of the East Contra Costa Bicycle Plan, which has existing facilities in Oakley as well as plans for further expansion.

Geography and environment

The Oakley areas offers access to the Delta de Anza Regional Trail. According to reports provided by CNN Oakley experiences 21.16 inches of annual rainfall with high temperature in July of 83.0 F and low temperature in January of 40.0 F. Oakley experiences 52% of clear days in the area during the year.

Demographics

As of the 2006 demographics report produced by the City of Oakley there were 33,250 people and 10,523 households residing in the City, with an average household size of 3.21. A total of 36,717 people live within 3 miles of oakley and 197,462 people within a 10 mile radius. The racial makeup of the city was 74.0% White, 4.0% Black or African American, 1.0% Native American, 3.0% Asian, 18.0% from other races. 27.0% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

In the City the population was spread out with 31.0% under the age of 18, 10.0% from 18 to 24, 33.0% from 45-59, and 9.0% who were 60 years of age or older. 51.0% of the population was male and 49.0% female.

The median income for a household in the City was $86,500. As of February 2006 the median home value was $494,500 and there were 90% Owner occupied housing units. 14,900 residents are employed in Oakley, with an unemployment rate of only 3.1%. There are 3,740 jobs available in oakley.

As of the census of 2000 the population density was 796.4/km² (2,063.2/mi²)and a 247.0/km² (639.9/mi²) average housing density. In 2000 there were 7,832 households, out of which, 52.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.2% were married couples living together, 9.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 17.5% were non-families. 13.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.

With 99.6%, nearly all students living within the City of Oakley are attending a public or private school located within City limits. The City is mainly served by Oakley Unified Elementary School District (K-8) and the Liberty Union High School District.

*Almond Grove Elementary School has been constructed on Carpenter Road between Brown and Empire. However, due to the downturn in the housing market, the OUESD board of trustees has decided to postpone the opening of Almond Grove and shall reconsider opening the school in the spring of 2009.

"Oakley orphans"

A small group of Oakley citizens living east of Empire Avenue, are served by the Antioch Unified School District and forced to attend school in Antioch. They are colloquially known as "Oakley orphans." Following the incorporation of the city in 1999, steps were taken to ensure that Oakley residents would no longer be forced to attend Antioch schools. However, an agreement was never met and the Antioch Unified School District has begun construction on Orchard Park School, a K-8 school run by the Antioch Unified School District, but located in Oakley. This school will open in September 2007 to serve K-4 "Oakley orphans", and will eventually reach its full capacity of K-8.
