is a village
near Sowerby Bridge
, West Yorkshire
. The settlement dates back the 13th century and were originally timber farms
located just about the marshlands
. These were replaced in the 16th and 17th centuries by stone houses that mainly belonged to workers of the wool
industry which moved into the area at this time. The village has a church, St. Luke's, and a village school that were built in the 1880s.
The annual Norland scarecrow festival was instigated by a millennium committee for the village in 1999. Every year a different theme for the event is set and the houses in the village create scarecrows along the lines of this theme and compete for the prize of best scarecrow.
