Nicktoons are animated television programs airing on the children's television channel Nickelodeon and its many spin-offs.
On Sunday, August 11 1991 at 10:00 am EST, the first Nicktoon aired, Doug. This show was followed by Rugrats and then The Ren and Stimpy Show. This format was repeated every Sunday.
Prior to 1991, Nickelodeon aired mostly foreign-based animated series mainly coming from Canada, United Kingdom, France, Eastern Europe (mainly Russia & Poland), and Japan as well as American animated series that were produced by other companies.
Over the years, more Nicktoons were created and aired. Other Nicktoons were created for Nick Jr., Nickelodeon's late morning and early afternoon lineup for younger children.
