Nested set

Nested set model

A nested set model is a way of organising hierarchical data in a (flat) relational database. The underlying mathematics is based on the graph theory and set theory. The earliest mention of this approach seems to be in an article by Michael Kamfonas, however, the name "nested sets" seems to have been first used by Joe Celko. Also see hierarchical model.
