Fictional character biography
Chad Channing is a teenage mutant in a future where superheroes are outlawed and there is a Sentinel on every street corner. After the
Mutant Registration Act all mutants are identified at birth and given registration numbers (which are burnt into the forearm) as well as suppression medication that stops their mutant abilities from manifesting. Beneath the futuristic New York streets, Chad stumbles upon the preserved brain of scientific genius and former superhero
Reed Richards, who supplies him with
placebo medicine, allowing his suppressed mutant abilities to manifest. Together the pair protect the innocent from threats such as the Mole People or, more often, from being harmed during the single-minded Sentinel fights with rogue mutants. Reed aids Chad with a cybernetic body built in the form of his former colleague
Ben Grimm.
Chad features in an arc of Kirkman's
Marvel Team-Up featuring a group of C-list heroes called "The League of Losers". A group of heroes including
Darkhawk,
Speedball, Dagger of
Cloak and Dagger,
Araña,
X-23,
Sleepwalker and
Gravity coming to the future to prevent the villain Chronok from stealing Richards' time machine, who plans to come to the present and kill all Marvel's major heroes. The team defeats Chronok, but at the end of the story, Richards reveals they can't go back to their present, due to time-travel and alternate timelines. The group decides to stay in the future, satisfied with the impact they made, however unnoticed. Mutant 2099 suggests reforming the
Avengers or the "Fantastic Nine".
This grouping also appears in Deadpool/GLI: Summer Fun Spectacular #1 (September 2007). Squirrel Girl, having misunderstood the particulars of time travel, visits the group for a short period. She learns they are allied with the long-lived hero Mr. Immortal.
Powers and appearance
Mutant wears a form fitting blue costume, a full head mask (except for an open hair top), and lenses on the eyes. Mutant's powers include telekinetic abilities he can use to enhance his agility and strength to above human standards, he can also propel himself through the air.
