Monumento de Santiago

Monumento de Santiago

The Monumento a los Héroes de la Restauración is a monument in the city of Santiago de los Caballeros in the Dominican Republic. It was constructed by President Rafael Leónidas Trujillo in the 1940's as an honor to himself. After Trujillo's assassination and the end of his regime, the government changed the name to "Monumento a los Héroes de la Restauración" (Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration).

It is located on a hill in the middle of Santiago with spectacular views of the city and surrounding mountains. It also has a surrounding park and it is an attractive place at night where people go to relax.

Reconstruction

The Monument just finished a remodeling process that included the construction of three plazas, one dedicated to Santiago's customs, the other to famous Dominican writers and the last to the Águilas Cibaeñas or Cibao Eagles, the local and extremely popular baseball team. This complex will contain the most modern security system in Santiago, with 34 surveillance cameras, a visual museum of Santiago's customs, amongst other attractions. This visual museum will be the biggest in the Caribbean region.
