Modasa

Modasa is a city and a municipality in Sabarkantha district in the Indian state of Gujarat. It is an economic centre for agricultural exports, at both the provincial and national levels. As a centre for the surrounding villages, Modasa acts as a transportation hub for both residents and tourists, and has two large hospitals: Mahatma Gandhi Hospital and Sarvajanik Hospital. The city also provides a nucleus of doctors for the people of north Gujarat and some migrants of south Rajasthan.

Modasa is emerging as an education centre for the area, with new pharmacy and engineering colleges supplementing the more traditional educational faculties. These colleges are run by the M. L. Gandhi Higher Education Society. Dr. Dhirubhai Thakar and Dr. D. A. Ghanch are the architects of the campus. The city now has colleges of law, science, education, arts, commerce, and pharmacy, as well as business administration to MBA and BBA levels. Study courses run by the Government Engineering College include mechanical engineering, computer engineering, electronics and communication engineering, civil engineering, and electrical engineering.

Demographics

As of the 2001 India census, Modasa had a population of 54,056. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Modasa has an average literacy rate of 74%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 81%, with female literacy at 67%. In Modasa, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Notable natives and residents

On July 27, 2008, Doctor Prerak Shah and his wife Kinjal were killed in a bomb blast outside Civil Hospital’s trauma center in Ahmedabad. Dr. Shah, who had been working and studying at the hospital, and had just cleared his MS finals, was planning to open his own clinic in Modasa, the couple’s hometown. He and his wife, who was pregnant at the time, were killed by the second of two bomb blasts that claimed a total of 19 lives.
