Mitra carbonaria is a medium-large species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusc in the family Mitridae, the miter snails or miter shells.

. It is found around southern Australia, including Tasmania

, and is found rarely in the northern half of the North Island
of New Zealand.
This species is found in sandy rocky areas from low tide down to depths of a few metres
The shell of this species is moderately large, elongate-fusiform
, smooth, with a chocolate-brown shell.
The shell height is up to 64 mm, and width up to 20 mm.
