Michael "Mike" Seidel (born January 18, 1956) is an
American meteorologist who works for the
The Weather Channel. He is seen in the studio Saturday through Wednesday and is most noted for his reporting live at the site of
hurricanes and snowstorms. Seidel first appeared on air at The Weather Channel in March 1992.
Early career
Seidel's interest in weather started at a young age. He worked for five local radio stations during high school and college, including WJDY-AM in
Salisbury, Maryland, WDMV-AM in
Pocomoke City, WSUX-FM in Seaford, Deleware, and WKHI-FM in
Ocean City, Maryland. After graduating from
Wicomico Senior High School, he earned a B.S. from Salisbury State College, (now
Salisbury University) in
Mathematics. Immediately afterwards, he started his television career with
WMDT, an
ABC affiliate, in 1980. He earned his
Master's Degree in
Meteorology at
The Pennsylvania State University, and wrote his thesis under
Dr. Greg Forbes, now The Weather Channel's severe weather expert. While at Penn State he appeared on
Weather World on The Pennsylvania Public Television Network.
His first full-time TV job was at WYFF-TV, the NBC affiliate in Greenville, South Carolina, where he was employed from 1983 to 1989. He then returned to his hometown of Salisbury in 1989 to work as Chief Meteorologist for top-rated WBOC-TV, the local CBS affiliate. He remained there until March 1992, when he left for The Weather Channel.
The Weather Channel
Seidel covered his first storm, which was
Hurricane Edouard, on
Labor Day Weekend in 1996 on
Cape Cod. Since then he has covered more than forty tropical storms and
hurricanes,
Nor'easters, numerous snow and ice storms and has also reported live from the
PGA Tour, the
All-Star Game and
World Series and
The Indianapolis 500. Since 2002, he has hosted the
National Football League Kickoff Forecast every Sunday morning through
Super Bowl Sunday at various outdoor NFL venues.
While at The Weather Channel, he has appeared on numerous network news programs, including NBC's The Today Show and NBC Nightly News, CBS's The Early Show, The CBS Evening News and CBS Sunday Morning, and ABC's Good Morning America, World News Tonight and World News Now. He also filled in for Tony Perkins on GMA in 2003. Seidel has also reported live from breaking weather on MSNBC, CNN and Fox News Channel.
Personal life
Seidel has been married to the former Christine Schroder since 1994. They have two children, Sam and Zoe.
