Max-Peter Ratzel

Max-Peter Ratzel (1949-) is a German law enforcement officer, and the Director of Europol, the European Union law enforcement organisation that handles criminal intelligence.

He was born in Dillingen/Saar, in Germany, in 1949.

Ratzel studied mathematics and physics in the University of Saarbrücken and served in the German Air Force.

Ratzel started his career in the Bundeskriminalamt (Federal Criminal Police Office, Wiesbaden, Germany) in 1976, where he was the Head of the Organised and General Crime Department and had over 850 police officers under him to combat child pornography, Internet crime, counterfeit money and human trafficking.

On February 24, 2005, the Justice and Home Affairs Council finally selected Mr. Max-Peter Ratzel for the position of Europol Director. He took up his position as Director on April 16, 2005.

Max-Peter Ratzel married Rosemarie Ratzel, a nursery school teacher, on March 30, 1976. He has two sons and a daughter.
