Matthew Fontaine Maury High School, one of five city comprehensive high schools, is a high school located in historic Ghent area of Norfolk, Virginia. Ghent, the community immediately surrounding Maury High School, has experienced an extensive period of renewal which includes upscale single-family and town home construction along with a steady increase of small, thriving businesses. Maury's school mascot is the Commodore. The high school is named for Matthew Fontaine Maury.
In recent years, Maury High School's administration has come under criticism from both students and teachers. This is due in part to a series of highly unpopular decisions made by the administration. In early 2007, the administration denied members of the school's marching band entry to the football games, with the reasoning that the football games would make more money if there was more room for students. Eventually the marching band was permitted entrance back into the games, but was temporarily banned from playing.
